What happens at a hairdressers when you get a cut and then highlights?

i have always had a private hairdresser do it at her home, very casual.

this time i have to go to a hairdresser.............

what happens? What happens at a hairdressers when you get a cut and then highlights?
usually exactly the same thing as when you get your hair done normally.

You call up, and book your appointment. You arrive at the time of your appointment, maybe slightly early, but never late, maybe bring some reading material. You tell the receptionist that you are here for your appointment, and you then follow her instructions. These are usually something along the lines of 'wait over there'. Sometimes there will be a couch, sometimes they will take your coat. Occasionally, they will offer you something to drink, depending on how posh the place is.

When the hairdresser is ready for you, someone will call you over. You then sit in the seat, in front of a mirror, wearing a gown over your clothes. They will then ask you what you want done with your hair. You tell them, as descriptively as possible, maybe bring some images to show them. They will usually start to fiddle with your hair at this point.

They then either go into the back room, or they get someone else to go, and they come back with a small wheeled cart, with a little plastic bowl, brush, and some aluminum foil. They then proceed to apply the dye to your hair, wrapping each highlight in foil as they go. Sometimes they will chat to you about what you did on your holiday, where you're going this year, basic chit-chat. Once they have placed all your highlights they will ask you to wait for the developing time. Sometimes this is in another place, but usually, you don't have to move.

When that time is up, they will remove the foils, and take you over to a sink, where they will wash, and condition your hair for you. (This is my favorite bit). Once all the dye has been washed out, they then take you back to the cutting chair, and will usually reconfirm what you want done. They will then proceed to cut. Again, there will usually be that basic chatter, unless you choose to read a magazine.

Once that is all finished, they will often blow-dry, and style your hair, before letting you go. You then walk back to the reception desk, where you pay for your haircut, and dye. You then either retrieve your coat, or they bring it to you, and you go off, with your brand new hairstyle.
